Fun Cozy Fantasy!
I loved A Pirate’s Life for Tea by Rebecca Thorne – this is the sequel to the first book in the series Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea.
The author Rebecca Thorne has described these stories as “cozy fantasies with higher stakes”. There is more action and adventure than a typical cozy fantasy, but they are still sprinkled with the kindness of a comfort read.
The new book begins with one of my favorite dedications by an author: “To the people who gave me one star reviews because the first book “had lesbians.” I doubled the lesbians in this one. Just for you.”
A Pirate’s Life for Tea continues the story of Reyna the expert swordswoman and her girlfriend (and now fiancé) Kianthe who is the most powerful mage in the realm. Two very strong women who are in love with each other who ran away in order to escape from their stressful jobs and then opened a tea and books shop together. Now, they have temporarily left their quiet and drama free bookstore on a quest to find stolen dragon eggs.
There is so much witty banter in this story that I giggled thru the majority of it. I really love these protagonists and in this book they share a lot of the page time with the two new characters, Serena the former failed farmer turned pirate and Bobbie the constable who crochets hats and stuffed animals when she is stressed. Which lately results in her having lots of woolen treasures she needs to give away.
My favorites though are still Kianthe and Reyna. They are both strong and powerful women who have such a healthy relationship because they place such a high value on communication. It’s one of the reasons I love them as a couple.
A Pirate’s Life for Tea is full of witty banter, bad puns, action, adventure, and is just a fun comfort read. The epilogue also sets the stage for the next adventure. It can be read as a stand alone, but I would definitely read the first one Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea in order to learn Kianthe and Reyna’s story! Anyone who enjoyed Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree would love this series. 5 stars
