Review of ‘Bulletproof’ by Maggie Cummings
This wlw action romance novel kept me on my toes. A few times when I was thinking that the plot was moving in a particular direction, it proved me wrong, both in the action and romance departments. It kept me expecting the other shoe to drop which was fun and unexpected.
Dylan Prescott is a police detective who gets the chance to join the investigation into a drug dealers‘ ring. Briana Logan is the Assistant United States Attorney in charge of prosecuting that case. When their professional and personal lines start to blur, and their mutual attraction difficult to avoid, they will have to make hard decisions between their jobs and love…
Some authors write plot-driven tales, some others character-driven ones, but Ms. Cummings creates relationship-driven stories. In that department, she’s in a league of her own. She weaves the net of relationships skillfully through natural-sounding dialogues, everyday situations, and a good dose of reality. She creates intimate, authentic spaces and invites the reader to a fly on the wall voyeuristic experience into the lives of the main characters. I love when authors can create something meaningful out of ordinary life situations.
‘Bulletproof’ is mainly a romance but there is a good deal of police procedural on the side. Because Ms. Cummings is a police captain with the NYPD, she knows what she’s talking about. I wish she’d write more in that genre, I think that considering her knowledge and experience along with her talent as an author, she would knock it out of the park. This book left me craving for more of that. Just saying…
Regarding the love story itself, even though it follows the usual romance novel formula, Ms. Cummings smartly avoids the stereotypes. Her presentation of the ‘black moment’ and the ‘grand gesture’, doesn’t strictly follow the genre norms. She even spared us from commonplace scenes in the action parts, especially at the end. I’m glad she didn’t fall into the temptation to create larger than life characters. Both women are more than interesting enough.
If you are looking for a beautiful romance with a side of police procedural and a little bit of action, you are gonna enjoy ‘Bulletproof’. As usual, Maggie Cummings doesn’t disappoint. Here’s hoping for an audiobook version. 5 stars.
