Review of ‘Hopeless Romantic’ by Georgia Beers, audiobook narrated by Lori Prince
As any reader can tell you that they have their favorite authors, any audiobook listener has preferred narrators. Now, when you have a lesbian rom-com audiobook like ‘Hopeless Romantic’ that combines both, it’s a day in lesfic paradise. I will listen to anything that has the Beers/Prince combination on the label. Once again, I wasn’t disappointed.
Teddi Baker used to believe in happily ever afters until a bitter divorce left her with a broken heart and a third of her successful wedding planning business. Leah Scott is a staunch believer in love, something at odds with her profession of a divorce lawyer. She’s just waiting for the right woman to appear and when she meets her sister’s wedding planner, Leah cannot stop thinking about her. But Leah was Teddi’s ex-wife divorce attorney and despite their mutual attraction, Leah is adamant to keep her distance…
This is a lighthearted, fun, and charming enemies to lovers romance. It’s no news that Ms. Beers excels at writing rom-coms like this one though she can also write compelling angsty books. She’s in her element here, fleshing out likable characters with strong chemistry between them. ‘Hopeless Romantic’ is an homage to the great variety of romantic comedies that helped to shape the genre and all its main elements are present here including a fairy tale ending.
But that’s not all, as there’s also space for a serious insight about relationships, marriage, and divorce. I suspect that Ms. Beers gives a piece of her mind in the characters’ musings about these issues but it doesn’t feel preachy or didactic and it’s balanced well with the rest of the story. If you like your books with a slice of food for thought, then this one is for you.
I’ll never tire to say that Lori Prince is a great match to narrate Ms. Beers’s books and this is no exception. Her lighthearted tone is tailor-made for this story, her combination of deadpan and comical deliveries is a mark of her style that works perfectly here. All her voices are distinctive and consistent with their personalities. Her performance of the emotional moments is also top-notch. Highly recommended to all lovers of rom-coms. 5 stars.
